Legalization of cannabis!
From now on, medical cannabis can be sold in German pharmacies – legalization of cannabis plants
Version of 07.07.2021
German pharmacies had to rely on imports to sell medical cannabis. This is now over.
From now on, hemp can be purchased directly in Germany through a cannabis agency commissioned by the federal government.
The federal government has now begun selling cannabis to pharmacies for medical purposes. The cannabis agency at the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices has commissioned three companies in Germany to grow cannabis.
Until now, pharmacies have been importing medical cannabis. The reason for this was that the federal government spent a long time setting up the cannabis agency and putting the cultivation out to tender.
10,4 tons of cannabis!
Medical cannabis is now sold to pharmacies at a price of €4,30 per gram, with no surplus. The Federal Institute explained that the aim of cultivation in Germany is to ensure additional supply for patients. The German cultivation volume is around 10,4 tonnes of medical cannabis. This will be distributed over four years, with 2,6 tonnes each year.
The Cannabis Agency!
The Cannabis Agency was established at the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices. It is responsible for the controlled cultivation, harvesting, processing, quality control, storage, packaging and distribution to pharmacies of medical cannabis flowers in Germany.
The Cannabis Agency was established in 2017 when the “Cannabis as Medicine” law came into force. Since then, doctors have been able to prescribe medical cannabis flowers or cannabis extract with a narcotic prescription. It is used to relieve pain in seriously ill patients. As a result, cannabis can only be sold in pharmacies with a prescription.
In most cases, the costs of therapy are covered by health insurance companies.
