Nattokinase – The enzyme for blood thinning

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. Natto, a cheese-like food made from soybeans fermented with Bacillus subtilis, has been consumed as a traditional food in Asian countries for more than 2000 years. Natto consumption is believed to be an important factor in the longevity of the Japanese population. Although natto has been consumed in Asia for thousands of years, its fibrinolytic property was only discovered in 1987.

Why not just eat natto?

So why not include natto in your diet and buy a nattokinase enzyme supplement instead? Well, on the one hand it is a rather unpopular taste and on the other hand it is a time-consuming manufacturing process. In addition, there are several other reasons to consume the nattokinase enzyme alone. About 1.000 nanograms per 100 g of natto contains a very high amount of vitamin K2. It has the opposite effect of nattokinase and tends to thicken the blood. Although the food is believed to thin the blood at least somewhat, the effect is usually neutralized. It is difficult to consume natto to absorb the required amount of nattokinase. The content of nattokinase in natto varies greatly depending on the variety and degree of maturity. Pure nattokinase can be quickly taken in the desired high dose. Because of its soy sauce, natto is not suitable for allergy sufferers. However, the nattokinase enzyme does not have an allergic effect. The taste of natto takes some getting used to and does not have the same effect. It is also difficult to manage.

Make Natto yourself?

If you still want to try natto (as mentioned, natto contains many other high-quality ingredients, so it's not a bad idea), I'd like to explain how to make your own soy sauce dish. See: Click

As a dietary supplement, Nattokinase is available in capsule or powder form. In addition to pharmacies and producers, there are also some certified online shops where you can buy it. Nattokinase capsules or nattokinase powder, as well as other dietary supplements without a prescription.

Nattokinase Effect

In alternative medicine, it is believed that nattokinase supports people with heart and vascular diseases by dissolving blood clots that can impede blood flow. It is very similar to plasmin, our body's own blood clot-dissolving substance. Plasmin and thrombin belong to the enzyme group of proteases, two enzymes produced by the body that are involved in blood clotting. Thrombin, for example, promotes the formation of thrombi (thrombus = blood clot) and thus causes the blood to clot. For this purpose, thrombin produces fibrin. This can not only close wounds, but unfortunately also blood vessels, which can later lead to thrombosis, heart attack or stroke. Plasmin, in turn, is an enzyme that dissolves blood clots or the fibrin they contain. This process is also called fibrinolysis. Therefore, if there is an intact balance in the body, blood clots cannot persist permanently because they are dissolved by plasmin long before undesirable events (thrombosis, heart attack, etc.) occur.

Nattokinase breaks down fibrin, the protein that is the main component of the coagulation system and helps to close wounds by forming a fine fibrous framework. Nattokinase could be described as our natural plant source of plasmin. Nattokinase is the most powerful fibrinolytic enzyme of nearly 200 foods. It is also more powerful than garlic, bromelain or ginseng. Nattokinase is also said to have a blood-thinning effect, as follows: In their metabolism Two extremely active substances (peptides) are created, which in turn activate a specific substance with fibrinolytic properties. This substance is an enzyme produced by the body and is called tissue-specific plasminogen activator. The two peptides are also said to be responsible for the blood pressure-lowering effect of nattokinase by reducing the activity of renin (enzyme from the kidneys) and angiotensin I (hormone). Both are two substances produced by the body that can raise blood pressure. Neither nattokinase nor its peptides have any effect on the level of blood fats (triglycerides and cholesterol).

Nattokinase and blood thinners, is that possible?

If you have been taking a blood thinning or anticoagulant medication for a long time, the temptation is of course great to replace it with the natural alternative, Nattokinase. It is better not to do this on your own. Ask your doctor or alternative practitioner, because we do not yet know whether Nattokinase works as intended for everyone and what the right dose would be for each individual. Combining Nattokinase with blood thinning medication is not recommended, at least not if you take both in the usual dosage, as this could lead to excessive blood thinning and internal bleeding:

Blood thinning medications:
  • Phenprocoumon (e.g. Marcumar) or
  • warfarin
  • Heparin
  • Clopidogrel
  • ASS
  • Rivaroxaban (Xarelto)
  • dabigatran etexilate (Pradaxa)
  • Apixaban Eliquis

It would certainly be conceivable to reduce the dose of the blood-thinning medication and start with small doses of Nattokinase. Admittedly, such a tapering off or tapering off process must be discussed with your doctor without question. No matter what medication you have to take regularly, discuss the additional intake of Nattokinase with your doctor!

Nattokinase as a “super enzyme” against spike proteins (long covid)

in a report published in August 2022 Study called “Degradative Effect of Nattokinase on Spike Protein of Sars-CoV-2”, investigated the degradative effect of nattokinase on the spike protein of Sars-CoV-2. They found that the virus did not infect the cell. The extra ingredients degraded the spike protein on the virus surface, meaning the cell did not absorb the virus. The highly contagious N501Y variant of the virus could also be combated in this way. In addition, the extract was effective against bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1), which occurs in cattle. However, it was also found that this only works at low temperatures. If the enzyme is heated, it becomes ineffective.

Which Nattokinase products are good? Good Nattokinase products can be selected according to the following criteria:
  • High-quality capsules usually contain 100 mg nattokinase in a concentration of 2.000 FU*
  • Gastro-resistant capsules or capsules made of cellulose and not gelatin
  • no additives such as magnesium stearate
  • free of vitamin K
  • free of soy residues
  • Laboratory tested for purity and radioactivity
  • Production without genetic engineering

*FU is a unit. It stands for Fibrinolytic Unit, which indicates the strength of the activity of the respective enzyme and thus also of Nattokinase.

Nattokinase is particularly attractive for prevention when certain risk factors indicate cardiovascular and vascular diseases, as inadequate blood circulation could be a contributing factor at any time.

  • Hypertension
  • overweight
  • Circulatory disorders
  • varicose veins
  • hemorrhoids
  • beginning arteriosclerosis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • the chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Endometriosis
  • fibroids
  • muscle cramps

Nattokinase dosage

The official dosage recommendation for Nattokinase is 2.000 FU or 100 mg of pure Nattokinase per day. However, some studies have used a higher dose in the range of 5.000 FU or 250 mg to achieve a significant effect. Please note that you must keep the dose as low as possible if you are already taking blood-thinning foods. The possible potentiated effect can have fatal consequences such as internal bleeding. In this case, you should always consult your doctor. But even if you are taking it without a blood thinner, you should start with the official maximum dose to be on the safe side. You can then try a little more FU per day in small steps.

Nattokinase can be taken permanently, as a course of treatment, or just when necessary.

Is it better to take Nattokinase alone or in combination with other active ingredients?

Some products contain a mixture of OPC and L-arginine. These two supplements can also slightly thin the blood and make the venous tissue more flexible. However, other mixed formulations are not recommended. In fact, many vitamins such as vitamin K1 and vitamin K2 act as antagonists and thicken the blood, which significantly limits the effect of nattokinase. Ultimately, a pure formulation is the best way to specifically measure the effectiveness of nattokinase and adjust it if necessary.

How does the body metabolize nattokinase?

The main receptors for nattokinase are, of course, the intestinal mucosa. When the powder (or capsules) is taken as a drink, the enzyme can be partially absorbed through the oral mucosa. A frequently asked question in this context is whether nattokinase can survive aggressive stomach acid. In fact, enzymes are very heat and acid resistant. Therefore, it can withstand temperatures of up to 50 °C. When consumed in capsule form, it additionally protects the enzymes from the effects of stomach acid and reaches the intestine "healthy".

A final word on Nattokinase

At first glance, Nattokinase seems like a rather boring dietary supplement. Apart from its blood-thinning and fibrinolytic effects, the enzymes in fermented soybean dishes are almost no different. Nevertheless, the effects on the body and health are breathtakingly surprising and scientifically proven by high-quality research. It dissolves blood clots and improves blood circulation, greatly increasing the oxygen supply to all blood vessels. Natto kinase can relieve symptoms such as headaches, circulatory problems and chronic fatigue It can also help minimize the risk of serious cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack or stroke. The fact that Nattokinase has no side effects makes the supplement even more interesting.

IMPORTANT: People who take blood thinners should definitely discuss their use with their doctor beforehand.
