What is Q10?
Q10 is a quinone derivative, also known as ubiquinone-10 and coenzyme. If you look at the structure more closely, Q10 is related with vitamin K and Vitamin E. Q-10 is sold as an ingredient in cosmetic creams as well as a dietary supplement.
Natural Q10 with Ubiquinone
Q-10 is a yellow-orange, crystalline powder with no smell or taste. Q10 is also a substance produced by the body. It is partly absorbed through food, but also produced in the body itself. In every human cell, the energy from food is converted into the body's own energy. Q10 is involved as a coenzyme, which generates 95% of the body's total energy. The organs with the highest energy requirements - such as the heart, lungs and liver - therefore also have the highest Q-10 concentration. Coenzyme Q10 is considered an anti-aging agent that is often advertised as a way to prevent wrinkles. Coenzyme Q10 is also known for a healthy cardiovascular system.
In which foods is Q10 found?
Q10 is a substance produced by the body itself and also absorbed through food. Q10 is found in all body cells. Foods that contain Q10 [1]:
- meat from organs (e.g. liver)
- oily fish (sardines, mackerel)
- nuts (pistachios)
- legumes, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, vegetable oils
- cabbage, onions, potatoes, spinach, Brussels sprouts, broccoli
However, cooking can destroy the coenzyme.
